AirPods Max vs Sony WH-1000XM5: A Weighty Question With a Very Loud Answer

Also, plot twist: if you're picturing the AirPods Max you remember, update your mental model. Apple retired the original and rolled out the AirPods Max 2 in March 2026, running Apple's H2 chip. That's the pair actually on shelves, so that's the pair getting graded here.

I've read the reviews on both extensively— RTINGS, What Hi-Fi, Tom's Guide, SoundGuys. Here's what you need to know, filtered through people who put these on their actual heads so I didn't have to lie about putting them on mine.

Sound Quality: Closer Than Apple Wants You to Think

Both of these sound phenomenal, according to two very different sets of professional ears. Tom's Guide calls the AirPods Max 2's lossless USB-C audio "utterly divine," with clean separation between instruments, and Apple's own newsroom confirms the Max 2 pushes 24-bit, 48kHz lossless audio over that cable, on top of H2-chip software extras like Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, and Live Translation.

The Sony XM5 isn't playing defense here. What Hi-Fi describes "sensational sonic clarity" out of its 30mm driver— a different flavor of good than Apple's spatial-audio party trick, not a lesser one.

Nobody I've read is arguing either pair sounds bad. Trained ears will find real differences at the margins; if your listening diet is Discover Weekly on the subway, you're fine either way.

Edge: Call it a draw, with an asterisk for Apple's ecosystem tricks if you already live in Apple Music.

Active Noise Cancellation: The Sony Silence

Sony's been the ANC king for years, and reviewers aren't ready to hand back the crown. RTINGS calls the XM5's isolation "outstanding," saying it's "handily tackling noise from the bass to the treble range." What Hi-Fi puts the XM5 "among the class leaders when it comes to isolating us from constant drones."

Here's the twist: Apple's Max 2 closed a real chunk of the gap. RTINGS rates its isolation "exceptional," and Apple's own launch announcement claims ANC "up to 1.5x more effective than the previous generation." SoundGuys measured it directly— about 89.4% of outside noise attenuated on the Max 2, versus 88% for the original. Real progress, but not "1.5 times" real; SoundGuys itself calls Apple's framing "a bit of a stretch."

Edge: Sony XM5, but by less than either company's marketing suggests.

Comfort: The Weight Problem

This is where the AirPods Max 2 have a genuine, serious problem, and the chip upgrade did nothing to fix it.

Per Apple's own spec sheet, the Max 2 weighs 386.2 grams— a figure What Hi-Fi and SoundGuys both confirmed independently. The Sony XM5 weighs 250 grams, per Sony's own spec, also confirmed by What Hi-Fi. That's roughly 54% more headphone strapped to your skull. Tom's Guide put it more bluntly, calling the Max 2 almost double the weight of the Bose QC Ultra and Sony's newer XM6.

What Hi-Fi found the earcups "can press on your ears before long," though it stops short of calling it unbearable— "never uncomfortable on the head" is the actual verdict. SoundGuys was tougher, writing that the clamping force "can make them uncomfortable to wear during long listening sessions," easing only as the headband breaks in. Nobody reviewing the Sony writes paragraphs like that; What Hi-Fi rates the XM5's comfort as "up there with the best."

Features and Ecosystem

AirPods Max 2 advantages:

• Folds flat for travel (the Max 2 still doesn't, and its case is... a topic)
• Speak-to-Chat, which auto-pauses when you talk
• Meaningfully longer battery life (see below)

Oh, the Max case. Apple's "Smart Case" covers the earcups and leaves the headband exposed, and looks like a handbag designed by someone who's never seen one. The XM5 ships with a full hard-shell case that protects the whole headphone. Revolutionary concept.

Edge: Depends on your ecosystem. All-Apple household? Max 2. Everyone else? Sony.

Battery Life

Sony XM5: up to 30 hours with ANC on, per Sony's own rating. RTINGS' continuous-playback test measured 27 hours, which is still enormous— you can fly most of the way to Tokyo and back without a charger.

AirPods Max 2: 20 hours with ANC on, per Apple. SoundGuys' own battery test landed almost exactly there, at "21 hours and 31 seconds." Respectable, but both SoundGuys and Tom's Guide call it disappointing next to current rivals; Tom's Guide flatly calls it a "feeble 20-hour battery life."

Edge: Sony XM5.

The Value Equation (Let's Get Mathematical, Minus the Actual Math)

For actual numbers, the deal cards below have today's figure for each. Converting straight from the reviews above instead: the Max 2 gets you premium sound, strong-but-not-quite-Sony ANC, deep Apple ecosystem integration, a heavy build, a merely-okay battery, and a case that still doesn't cover the whole headphone. The Sony gets you premium sound, best-in-class ANC, universal compatibility, a genuinely comfortable build, a much longer battery, a proper case, and an EQ you can mess with to your heart's content.

Sony does almost everything as well or better, in a lighter package, with more battery. Whatever the current gap is, it would buy a respectable number of burritos, and the Sony earns its keep either way.

Verdict

The AirPods Max 2 is a luxury item. It's the Porsche Cayenne of headphones— objectively capable, undeniably premium, and you're paying a real markup for the badge. If you're deep in Apple's world and comfort is secondary, it's lovely, and the H2-chip additions, Live Translation especially, are genuinely new tricks the original Max never had.

The Sony WH-1000XM5 is the better headphone for most humans, according to essentially every reviewer cited here: better comfort, better battery, ANC still a step ahead even after Apple's upgrade, better value. If I could only recommend one pair without hedging, it's the Sony, every time.

Get the AirPods Max 2 if: you're all-Apple, you value build quality and ecosystem tricks over how your neck feels by hour two, and price isn't the deciding factor.

Get the Sony XM5 if: you are a person who exists in the world and wants excellent headphones without a luxury markup.

Sony wins noise cancellation -- RTINGS calls it "outstanding" against Apple's merely "exceptional," and SoundGuys measured 89.4% attenuation against 88%, real progress but nowhere near the 1.5x multiplier Apple's marketing claims, a framing SoundGuys itself calls "a bit of a stretch." Sony wins comfort without argument: a headphone roughly 54% heavier is not a marginal difference, it is a design choice you feel by hour two, and SoundGuys and What Hi-Fi both documented it independently. Sony wins battery life by five to ten hours depending on whose figure you trust, ZXCVBNM!![keyboard mash]?!
